A namibian potjiekos with vegetables and spices

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 pound (1 kg) Lamb shoulder or Lamb neck
  • 3 medium Onions, coarsely chopped
  • 1 cup (240mL) Water
  • ⅔ pound (300gr) baby carrots, peeled
  • ⅔ pound small potatoes
  • 2 tsp currypowder
  • 1 tsp tumeric
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 3 cm fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves of garlic, crushed
  • ⅓ cup (80mL) milk
  • ⅔ pound (300gr) brown rice
  1. Cut the lamb shoulder into slices, season with salt and pepper. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan, cassserole or pot and brown the pieces of meat. Take the meat from the pot and set aside.
  2. Place the onions in the pot and fry until tender, add the curry powder, turmeric, cloves, garlic and ginger and fry for about 4 minutes.
  3. Add the meat again with the water. Cover the pot. and let simmer for 1 hour to let the flavors infuse.
  4. Now add the carrots and potatoes and let simmer for at least 1,5 hour (the longer the more tender and tasty this dish becomes)
  5. Stir the potjie now and then.
  6. Add the milk and let simmer for another 15 minutes
  7. Prepare the rice by following the packaging instructions.
  8. Enjoy!
